The boa constrictor is a large snake, with the largest individuals reaching lengths of up to 3.96m (13ft) long. Females are larger than males and can weigh up to 27kg (60lbs), although 15kg (33lbs) is more common. Also known as the Red-Tailed Boa, the boa constrictor gets this alternative name due to the reddish-brown "saddle" markings that become more prominent near its tail. Each population tends to have its own distinct coloration.
The boa constrictor is found across South America, with a preference to rainforest habitats. It is a solitary, nocturnal hunter, preying primarily on rodents, although it will tackle other medium-sized mammals or birds. It is a capable swimmer and, like most members of the boa family, the female gives birth to live young. Despite its size, it is a popular pet and can live up to 30 years or more in captivity.
Zoo Tycoon (Xbox)[]
The boa constrictor is an adoptable animal in the Xbox version of Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. It is available for adoption when a zoo reaches a fame level of 3, making it the first standard snake available for adoption.
The boa constrictor is a Mini-Exhibit animal and lives in the Tropical Tree exhibit. It is compatible with the Reticulated Python and Yellow Anaconda.
