The Wooly (or Woolly) Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) or Coelodonta is a large prehistoric ungulate from Eurasia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Woolly Rhinoceros is a species of rhinoceros that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch. It was similar in size to a modern day White Rhinoceros, but may have been heavier, with a maximum weight of 2700kg (6000lb) being estimated. Its thick hairy coat, known to be a reddish-brown color, and large fatty shoulder hump were both adaptations to the cold climates in which it lived.

Woolly rhinos, like modern rhinos, were herbivorous, feeding mainly on grasses and sedges that grew on the steppes using their wide upper lips to pluck the vegetation. Along with intraspecific combat and defense, it is possible they used their horns - the front one reaching over a meter in length - to move deep snow in order to uncover vegetation. The woolly rhinoceros was common across Europe and Asia, featuring in many cave paintings. Like many large Ice Age animals, it is believed that a combination of climate change and overhunting by humans led to the woolly rhino's extinction.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The wooly rhinoceros is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon. It was added as part of the Dinosaur Digs expansion pack and in Freeform mode, it is one of five prehistoric animals to be adoptable at the start of the game.

The wooly rhinoceros is a tundra animal, and its favorite foliage is the Arctic Grass. It is compatible with the Wooly Mammoth.

The Wooly Rhino (or Coelodonta) is a member of the family Rhinocerotidae, a relative of the smaller, hairless rhinos that are more common today. Coelodonta thrived in the much colder climates of the last Ice Age, using its great bulk and thick coat to keep warm.

The coat of Coelodonta is actually several layers of protective warmth. The top layer is long and dense hair, underneath which lies a layer of shorter, finer hair. Beneath both hair layers is a thick layer of fat to further protect the animal from the cold.

Twenty thousand years ago, Coelodonta were a common sight across much of Europe and Asia. Unlike many Ice Age mammals, Coelodonta never took advantage of the land bridge connecting North America to Asia, where the Bering Strait is today.

Coelodonta is about 11 feet long, but the pair of long curved horns on its head add to its length considerably. The longer of these two horns can be up to three feet long. This longer curved horn serves several purposes--self defense, attracting a mate, and clearing snow from food. Unlike the horns of other animals, the horns of Coelodonta and other members of the rhinoceros family are made from matted hair. The horns are solid rather than hollow and the fused hairs are very strong. Despite their material, these horns are tough enough to make the Coelodonta a fierce foe.

Despite its ability to defend itself, Coelodonta has been widely hunted by man. Early in the history of man, Coelodonta was a common food, as evidence left behind on French cave walls tells us. Early hunters most likely would use pits to trap these fierce animals and then kill them from a distance with rocks or spears. Since Coelodonta are solitary animals, like modern rhinos, and cannot move quickly, they often become food for humans, Sabre-tooth Cats and other large predators.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The woolly rhinoceros is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Extinct Animals expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption once a zoo reaches a rating of 3 and a half stars.

The woolly rhinoceros is a tundra animal, although it will also tolerate Alpine and Boreal Forest. Like all extinct tundra animals, it requires a glacier in its exhibit to be fully comfortable. It can be mixed with other tundra animals such as the Musk Ox and Caribou.

Zoo Tycoon Website favicon zootycoon.com Description
The woolly rhinoceros was similar in build to the modern rhinoceros, but it was well insulated with fat and covered in a thick layer of long, shaggy hair, which helped it survive in the cold, snowy conditions found across northern Europe and Asia. Like modern-day rhinos, the woolly rhinoceros lived alone or in small family groups. It may have been a gardener at heart: It mowed the grass with its short teeth and sometimes used its long horn to dig up plants for dinner.

Trivia[]

  • In Zoo Tycoon, the information plaque shows the Wooly Rhinoceros in the highland biome, despite being a tundra animal.
  • The only time the Wooly Rhinoceros' name is fully spelled out is in its hover box in the adoption menu.
  • The woolly rhinoceros is the only rhinoceros in Zoo Tycoon 2 where young males are larger than females. In this case, young females are scaled to 0.55 and young males are scaled to 0.7. In all other rhinos, young females are scaled to 0.5 while males are at 0.45.
    • Oddly, this scaling is not applied to the Super version of young woolly rhinos, where both male and female are scaled at 0.65. This makes the young male woolly rhinoceros the only Super animal smaller than its regular counterpart.
