The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is a large marine turtle found in tropical oceans worldwide. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The Green Sea Turtle is one of seven species extant turtle that are adapted for life in the sea. Despite its name, the green sea turtle is an olive/black coloration - the name comes from the color of its fat. Adults can reach lengths of 1.5m (5ft) long and weigh up to 190kg (419lb), but individuals weighing 395kg (871lb) have been recorded. Like all sea turtles, its front legs are paddle-shaped, which it uses to swim long distances in search of food.
Unlike many other sea turtles, the green sea turtle is primarily herbivorous, feeding mainly on sea grasses and algae using its serrated jaw. Almost entirely aquatic and preferring to live in warm coastal waters, female green sea turtles will only come out of the water to lay their eggs. A female may lay up to 200 eggs on the beach and will always return to the same shore she herself hatched from. The green sea turtle can live for up to 80 years in the wild, but the species is considered endangered and is protected by law in many countries.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The green sea turtle is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until June 1.
Like all Marine Mania animals, the green sea turtle is an Aquatic animal. Curiously, it does not require a hybrid exhibit in order to lay eggs, like its real-life counterpart - instead, it will simply give birth to live young like all extant reptiles in Zoo Tycoon.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The green sea turtle is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is available for adoption once a zoo reaches a star rating of 1. Each individual costs $2000 to adopt.
The green sea turtle is a Coastal animal, although it will tolerate Pelagic and Reef, as well as Wetlands to a lesser extent. Unlike Zoo Tycoon, the green sea turtle lays eggs and subsequently requires some land to lay them on. This can be achieved by creating a combined exhibit or placing an island in their tank. It can be safely exhibited with other Coastal animals such as the Rockhopper Penguin and West Indian Manatee.
Breeding and Profits[]
Since they are Endangered, Green Sea Turtles' breeding may be sped up by purchasing a Conservation Breeding Center, though even without the building it is easy to accumulate even dozens of animal in a fairly short span of time. Multiple Green Sea Turtle babies are produced at a time and the player receives a Balloon Bouquet for each of them, which in turn can be sold for $250.00 each. This can be a very effective strategy for making money in a Challenge Mode game, and also to increase Zoo Fame and complete passive missions by releasing Endangered animals back to the wild.

Trivia[]
- The green sea turtle is the only animal that eats from more food types as young than as an adult. Young green sea turtles in Zoo Tycoon 2 will eat Shellfish and Jellyfish in addition to Seaweed eaten by adult green sea turtles.
- The green sea turtle is tied with the Blacktip Reef Shark for the shallowest tank requirement in Zoo Tycoon 2, at a depth of 3 units.
- The green sea turtle also has the lowest initial space requirement of any animal, needing just 50 units to be completely satisfied.
- Green sea turtles were originally planned to be able to move on land and swim in regular water in the first game, even having unused animations for both these things, but are incapable of doing them in the final release. This is fixed in the second game.
