Platyhystrix (meaning "flat porcupine") was a primitive amphibian with a distinctive sail along its back, similar to pelycosaurs such as Dimetrodon and Edaphosaurus, and dinosaurs such as Spinosaurus. It lived during the Permian period of Texas, 290 to 270 million years ago. Platyhystrix appeared rather unusual: the dorsal vertebrae were extraordinarily lengthened, and in life they probably formed a skin-covered sail. This structure was possibly for thermal regulation, as in other animals of similar appearance. The back of Platyhystrix was also covered with thick hard plates, similar to those of its near relative, Cacops.
A Platyhystrix was included in a user-made XP for ZT1, bizarrely making a similar sound to the Parasaurolophus from the game Jurassic Park:
Operation Genesis. Another one was made for the ZT2 Prehistoric Monsters Pack and is downloadable from Zoo Tycoon Volcano. The ZT2 Platyhystrix is very colourful, having three separate varients.
