The Reticulated Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata, is a large ruminant native to Africa.

The reticulated giraffe is one of nine subspecies of giraffe. The Masai giraffe is another subspecies of giraffe, which is why the two kinds are able to interbreed in Zoo Tycoon 2.

Zoo Tycoon

The giraffe is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and its main biome is savannah. It is a rather easy animal to raise. However, because it requires a large amount of trees to make it feel comfortable, it is very hard for it to coexist with other animals.

In Zoo Tycoon 2

Habitat

The reticulated giraffe lives in the savannah biome. It enjoys lots of trees and large enclosures.

Diet

The reticulated giraffe is a tall browser, and will only eat branches.

Enrichment

The enrichment item of choice for the reticulated giraffe is the salt lick.

Shelter

The only shelter available for the giraffe is the giraffe house.

Behavior

The giraffe prefers to live in herds. Females will give birth to one calf at a time. It enjoys sharing enclosures with other African animals, such as zebras and wildebeests.

Trivia

  • Female giraffes give birth in one of several specific "calving areas" in their home ranges and return to these grounds to bear subsequent calves.
  • The giraffe's closest living relative is the okapi.
  • If a pride of lions attempts to prey on a giraffe, the lionesses are usually accompanied by a male lion because giraffes are very difficult prey.
  • Giraffes have influenced the growth of acacia trees. Acacia trees have continued to grow taller and taller until giraffes have tough times feeding off them.
