Zoo Tycoon Mobile - Marine Mania (PREVIEW)

Zoo Tycoon 2 Marine Mania Mobile gameplay preview

In Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania Mobile there are two game modes, Campaign and Freeform mode. Freeform mode plays similarly to the PC game in that the player has unlimited money to build their zoo however they want; however in the beginning all animals aside from the Great White Shark are locked. To unlock new animals in Freeform the player must play through at least the first six campaigns in Campaign Mode.

Campaign Mode features ten campaigns for the player to play through. Each campaign being unlocked with every campaign complete. The campaigns start off with the player as a new employee who, over the course of the game gets promoted to higher and higher positions, until reaching the last campaign where the player must build their masterpiece, a zoo with a rating of 3,000 and Guest Happiness of 100%. Completing all campaigns unlocks the Marine Campaign Award.

Hard Mode[]

Unlike other games in the series, Marine Mania Mobile has difficulty settings. By default, the game will be set to Normal mode, however the player may choose Hard Mode for a slightly higher challenge.

Hard Mode lowers the amount of income the player receives from guest donations and purchases. Animal donations are halved from $10 in Normal Mode to $5 in Hard Mode, guest purchases from buildings are also halved, such as the Souvenir Stand getting an income of $50 from guest purchases in Normal Mode to $25 in Hard Mode.

Rewards[]

There are 12 Rewards that the player may unlock during gameplay depending on the version of the game the player has.

Guests[]

Unlike Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile, Marine Mania Mobile has guests. Guests will automatically enter a zoo through an entrance in the front of the zoo, following paths the player lays down throughout their zoo.

Guests, like animals, have their own needs that must be met in order to keep them happy and from leaving the zoo early. The player must be mindful of a guest's hunger, thirst, bathroom, trash, and gift needs. Each need decays at a different rate as the guest walks through the zoo. The player can keep an eye on guest needs by entering the Manage Zoo menu and selecting Take a Walk which will allow the player to follow guests throughout their zoo and see the guest's individual needs.

Guest Happiness is shown to the player on a bar at the top of the screen. Giving the player a sense of overall guest happiness throughout their zoo.

Nokia Gameplay[]

Unlike the standard version of Marine Mania Mobile, the Nokia version is much more stripped down. The 3100 version has no Advice, Zoopedia, water filters, terrain tools, Photo Mode, Rewards, trees, language settings, and has smaller maps. The Nokia versions of Marine Mania Mobile also feature only 3 Campaigns rather than 10, the campaigns do not unlock anything and are only good for playing with a budget and having goals to meet.

Other Nokia versions such as the S40v2 and S40v2a versions have rewards, language settings and different UIs. The player being able to win the Marine Campaign Award in these versions for playing the campaigns.

Samsung SGH-E370 and Motorola Gameplay[]

The Samsung SGH-E370, Motorola L6 and RAZR V3 versions of the game are more complex than the Nokia versions, having many of the missing features from the Nokia versions, though still only having 3 campaigns to play. These versions also have 12 Rewards, 6 Photo Objectives and have larger maps than the Nokia version.

The only notable difference between the Samsung and Motorola versions gameplay is that the Select and Back keys are reversed in the Motorola versions.

Unlike the standard version of Marine Mania Mobile, the Samsung and Motorola versions have all their animals unlocked at the beginning of the game.

Animal Gameplay[]

Animals in Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania Mobile are unlocked as the player plays the campaigns. The Great White Shark being the first animal available and the Green Sea Turtle being the first to be unlocked. The Giant Pacific Octopus being the last animal to be unlocked.

All animals in Marine Mania Mobile are aquatic and placed in tanks. The player must take care of their animals by customizing their tanks, feeding them and making sure the water is clean.

All animals have food preferences depending on their species. The Zoopedia can help the player to determine what food, rocks, and plants the animals like, though some animals may like foods that are not mentioned in the Zoopedia. The player will know if they place something in the tank the animal likes by the animal emoting a happy face above its head.

The player can also see if an animal needs anything by selecting the Advice button below the Zoopedia. This will tell the player if an animal is lonely, feeling overcrowded, needs more or less land area, or to check the zoopedia for biome or food needs.

Every tank the player makes must have a Water Filter attached to it. This will keep the water in the tank clean and algae free. However, the Water Filter will get dirty over time, and so the player must clean it regularly. If the player neglects a filter for too long, the filter may break and need repair, costing the player a fine to repair it.

There are 3 different filter sizes, small, medium, and large. The small filter is cheap but needs to be cleaned more often, where as the large filter lasts the longest and doesn't need to be cleaned as often, though is more expensive.

If animals are well-fed and have their proper biome, they will be happy enough to breed, provided that there's at least one male and one female sharing a tank. Unlike Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile the player won't know when two animals breed. Instead, the player may get a pop-up telling them that a new animal was born. In all versions of the game, only four animals may be placed or birthed into a tank regardless of it's size.

Similar to Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile, when the player adopts an animal it will automatically be female first and male second, however unlike Zoo Tycoon 2: Mobile, the player can actually freely change the animal's gender before adoption by hitting the # button. The animals are also adopted as adults in Marine Mania Mobile instead of babies like in the original mobile game.

Unlike the other animals, the Bottlenose Dolphin and the Orca have a unique Trick Need. In order for the player to fulfil this need the player must teach the animal at least one trick. After the animal knows at least one trick, the player can set up a show which will automatically fulfil the animal's Trick Need each time they preform.

Trick Training First Attempt VS Final

Gif showing Marine Mania Mobile's difficulty adjustment while training an orca to level 5.

There are five levels to trick training, the minigame being a variation of the minigame seen in the PC version of Marine Mania, though instead of the player following the cursor along the path, the player must hit a sequence of numbers as the cursor passes over them. Each level adding more numbers and increasing the speed of the cursor. However, the minigame never becomes impossible as, with each failed attempt, the speed of the cursor becomes slightly slower, the minigame having automatic difficulty adjustment. The cursor will continue to slow down until the player is successful at the minigame. The player must get a score of 100% for the animal to learn the trick or advance their level.

The higher the animal's trick level is, the more money the trick will earn during shows. Though, the player must pay $200 in order to teach their animal tricks or advance their level.

The Green Sea turtle and Rockhopper Penguin are also unique in that they require land area in their exhibits to be happy. The green sea turtle sand and the rockhopper, a mix of snow and rock.

Nokia Animal Gameplay[]

In the Nokia versions of Marine Mania Mobile, animal needs are absent. The player does not have to feed their animals or customize the tanks to the animal's biome, water filters, plants and terrain tools are also absent. The only things the player can put into the tank are trick items. Adopted animals don't have gender and don't breed either. Though, while the animals don't have needs, guests still do.

Tanks are also automatically Deep Water when placed in the Nokia versions as well, likely due to the absent of terrain tools and lack of need for Coastal Water.

Like in the other versions of Marine Mania Mobile, in Nokia versions S40v2 and S40v2a the player can place a Dolphin Ride for guests to ride dolphins and earn extra income. This item is absent in the Nokia 3100 version.

The player also lacks the ability to name their animals in all Nokia versions, the animals being numbered instead.

Samsung SGH-E370 and Motorola Animal Gameplay[]

In the Samsung SGH-E370 and Motorola versions of Marine Mania Mobile animal needs and biome requirements are much more like the standard version. The player must use water filters to keep their animal's tanks clean, meet the animal biome needs, keep them healthy and fed. These versions also have gender, breeding and Zoopedias. Though unlike the standard version, all animals in these versions are unlocked at the beginning of the game. The player can also name their animals in these versions.
